The message NHV really delivers

Dan Miller is the coordinator of Nature and Human Values in the Liberal Arts and International Studies department.

In "Why NHV contradicts principles" (The Oredigger 90.14), Kevin Barry charges that Nature and Human Values delivers such messages as "MONEY IS MORALITY" and "The moral thing to do is proceed [with resource depletion], business as usual." The online version of his editorial has this title: "Why NHV contradicts everything Mines stands for." Nothing could be further from the truth.

Like other students in NHV, Mr. Barry learned about difficult situations in which, for example, engineers' judgments are overridden by superiors, sometimes for economic reasons. From that he somehow concludes that NHV preaches that economics should trump ethics. Obviously, pointing out a reality is not the same as endorsing that reality. If I observe that traffic on I-70 is heavy, I am hardly saying that traffic on I-70 should be heavy.

Community Spotlight: Old Capitol Grill

Sitting on the corner of 12th and Washington, the Old Capitol Grill is a landmark feature on Golden's downtown main street. Established in 1866, this historical building is not only a part of Golden's history, but of Colorado's as well.

commspotThe building itself is named the Loveland building after its constructor, W.A.H Loveland. The Loveland building was, in fact, the original capitol building of the Colorado territory and held Colorado's first legislative sessions in 1866. A battle raged in Congress over the issue of the location of the state capitol; should it be Golden or Denver? Golden lost by a mere vote; a vote many believe was bought. Although the Loveland building lost out on the honor of becoming the capitol building, it still continued to play an important part in Golden's history.

Redemption: 2010 baseball preview

web_baseballThe Mines baseball team is looking to rebound in 2010 after a disappointing campaign in 2009. The '09 team went 10-37 overall, going 7-27 in the RMAC. The Orediggers are led by third-year head coach Jerrid Oates and will lean on a core group of six seniors, headed by 2009 All-RMAC selections Andrew Ryan (second team) and Nick Wong (third team), as well as 2010 Pre-Season All-RMAC selection Cory Ast.

Ast, a 6'3", 190-lb left-hander from Westminster, Colorado started all 12 games in which he pitched last year. Ast led the team in strikeouts and innings pitched and is looking to improve on his performance from a year ago. He earned Honorable All-RMAC honors in 2008 and followed a good season with a solid playoff performance where he was named to the RMAC All-Tournament team. If this year's team is going to be successful it is going to lean on its starting pitching, especially Ast.
