It has been a roller coaster campaign for the Colorado School of Mines men's basketball team this season. Unfortunately, they entered Tuesday night's RMAC quarterfinal against Colorado Christian University on the low swing.

Mines put up a strong fight over 4 quarters, but couldn't sustain it as they fell 77-72 in overtime to the Cougars.
The Orediggers entered the night after earning their first 1st place finish in the RMAC east division in school history and riding an 11-1 record over their previous 12 games. "That's the tough thing," forward Drew Hoffman had to say, "is that we can go 11-1, but it's one and done when you get to the tournament. You don't get any second chances."

ORC bouldering competition brings in solid attendance, fierce competitors

With Red Rocks Park, North and South Table Mountains, and other natural features so close, it is no surprise that the climbing community in Golden is growing. Once again, the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC) hosted a bouldering competition to let climbers put their skills to the test. Just over 30 competitors participated last weekend in what has become a biannual event. ORC staff member and Colorado Mines student Cameron Frisby was one of the many people that made this event happen and he was pleased with the turnout, "The amount of people that show up is just perfect. It's not too crowded, but there is still some quality competition."

The ORC spent a full week prior to the competition setting up for the event. The wall was closed for the week and the lower 15 feet of the wall was stripped down to accommodate new climbing routes that were set up. This year, Mines brought in a professional setter to set up some of the problems. The remaining routes were set up by some of the ORC staff.

Tech Break - To Xfinity and Beyond!

Four months or so ago I wrote about Comcast's accomplishments in the internet arena. Since then the changes, which affect a signficant number of people in the Golden area, have kept on coming.

First and foremost, Comcast has launched the "Xfinity" service in some areas. The brand follows in the footsteps of Verizon's FiOS and AT&T's U-Verse and carries with it some minimum specifications on TV, internet and phone service to compete with the fiber-to-the-home technologies of its telephone company competitors.

They key word here is "competitors." The brand hasn't launched in Colorado because Qwest uses DirecTV to provide TV service, and still serves much of the area with several-year-old plain-vanilla ADSL service. Qwest is pushing fiber closer to its customers' homes and raising speeds as a result, but many areas have awhile to wait until Qwest's cute photon-focused web advertisements are even ten thousand feet from the truth.

Geek of the Week: Elliot Matthews, Sophomore, Geological

Do you consider yourself a geek?
Certainly! I have a thorough fascination with geology and groundwater. It is a true hunger for all knowledge concerning the two.

How did you come to be at Mines?
To be honest, it was nothing short of miraculous. I first encountered Mines through its geology museum when I was a toddler. However, it was until the beginning of my Senior year in high school that I re-discovered Mines. I semi-jokingly asked my advisor to send for information from the school and then was surprised when a week later I was seriously looking at the institution. I visited the school twice and the rest is history.

Athlete of the Week: Drew Hoffman, Basketball

The Mines men's basketball team saw some unprecedented success on the court this year. They won the most conference games in school history, finished first in the RMAC East division, and hosted a RMAC Shootout quarterfinal game against Colorado Christian. The Orediggers suffered numerous injuries and struggles throughout the season and were forced to rely on play from veterans on the team like junior guard Drew Hoffman. Hoffman, a California native, found his stroke late in the year as he became a consistent shooter and nearly shot Mines into postseason play. He was named the RMAC East division player of the week in mid-February and has evolved into a dangerous scorer on the court. But, as with so many of the student athletes at Mines, their lives go much further than sports.
